  3. The evolution of antibiotic resistance in bacteria is a significant public health risk influenced by several factors. Switched systems can abstract the evolutionary aspects driven by antibiotic use in a given population. However, mathematical models are not perfect, and uncertain dynamics remain. Based on a set theory approach, our main result is the development of an algorithm to demonstrate the stabilizability of a robust invariant set for the uncertain switched system. The algorithm also provides a characterization of invariant regions for switched systems under perturbations. Our findings provide insights into how to incorporate uncertainties in switched systems. This paves the way for selecting antibiotics to tackle drug-resistant infections.

    ABSTRACT DiarrheagenicEscherichia coli, collectively known as DEC, is a leading cause of diarrhea, particularly in children in low- and middle-income countries. Diagnosing infections caused by different DEC pathotypes traditionally relies on the cultivation and identification of virulence genes, a resource-intensive and error-prone process. Here, we compared culture-based DEC identification with shotgun metagenomic sequencing of whole stool using 35 randomly drawn samples from a cohort of diarrhea-afflicted patients. Metagenomic sequencing detected the cultured isolates in 97% of samples, revealing, overall, reliable detection by this approach. Genome binning yielded high-qualityE. colimetagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) for 13 samples, and we observed that the MAG did not carry the diagnostic DEC virulence genes of the corresponding isolate in 60% of these samples. Specifically, two distinct scenarios were observed: diffusely adherentE. coli(DAEC) isolates without corresponding DAEC MAGs appeared to be relatively rare members of the microbiome, which was further corroborated by quantitative PCR (qPCR), and thus unlikely to represent the etiological agent in 3 of the 13 samples (~23%). In contrast, ETEC virulence genes were located on plasmids and largely escaped binning in associated MAGs despite being prevalent in the sample (5/13 samples or ~38%), revealing limitations of the metagenomic approach. These results provide important insights for diagnosing DEC infections and demonstrate how metagenomic methods can complement isolation efforts and PCR for pathogen identification and population abundance. IMPORTANCEDiagnosing enteric infections based on traditional methods involving isolation and PCR can be erroneous due to isolation and other biases, e.g., the most abundant pathogen may not be recovered on isolation media. By employing shotgun metagenomics together with traditional methods on the same stool samples, we show that mixed infections caused by multiple pathogens are much more frequent than traditional methods indicate in the case of acute diarrhea. Further, in at least 8.5% of the total samples examined, the metagenomic approach reliably identified a different pathogen than the traditional approach. Therefore, our results provide a methodology to complement existing methods for enteric infection diagnostics with cutting-edge, culture-independent metagenomic techniques, and highlight the strengths and limitations of each approach.

Bonded magnetic composites combine the cost-effectiveness, low density, and manufacturing flexibility of conventional polymer binders with the unique magnetic characteristics of magnetic powders/fillers to form multifunctional magneto polymeric composites that offer superior properties to conventional sintered magnets. In this study, a co-rotating twin screw extruder was used to fabricate 20 and 40 wt.% strontium ferrite/polyamide 4.6 bonded magnetic composites viable for fused filament fabrication 3D printing. The characterization conducted on the bonded magnetic composites was scanning electron microscopy, simultaneous differential thermogravimetry, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The microstructure of the bonded composite exhibited a uniform platelet morphology of the strontium ferrite magnetic particles. There was no observable depreciation in the melting transitions, which suggests a thermally resistant magnetic composite. An appreciable increment in % crystallinity of 13 and 20% for 20wt. % and 40wt. % strontium ferrites bonded magnets were observed. This is attributable to the heterogeneous nucleation phenomenon, where the metal powders act as nucleation sites for increased crystalline domains. The bonded composite exhibited significant magnetic anisotropy, with the remanence (Mr), which is the most important property for magnetic application significantly increasing to 49.8% along the easy direction in comparison to the hard axis. This suggests the viability of the fabricated bonded composites in viable in producing anisotropic bonded magnetic devices, which are considered to exhibit stronger magnetic properties.

We investigate structural properties of massive galaxy populations in the central regions (< 0.7  r 500 ) of five very massive ( M 200  > 4 × 10 14   M ⊙ ), high-redshift (1.4 ≲  z  ≲ 1.7) galaxy clusters from the 2500 deg 2 South Pole Telescope Sunyaev Zel’dovich effect (SPT-SZ) survey. We probe the connection between galaxy structure and broad stellar population properties at stellar masses of log( M / M ⊙ ) > 10.85. We find that quiescent and star-forming cluster galaxy populations are largely dominated by bulge- and disk-dominated sources, respectively, with relative contributions being fully consistent with those of field counterparts. At the same time, the enhanced quiescent galaxy fraction observed in these clusters with respect to the coeval field is reflected in a significant morphology-density relation, with bulge-dominated galaxies already clearly dominating the massive galaxy population in these clusters at z  ∼ 1.5. At face value, these observations show no significant environmental signatures in the correlation between broad structural and stellar population properties. In particular, the Sersic index and axis ratio distribution of massive, quiescent sources are consistent with field counterparts, in spite of the enhanced quiescent galaxy fraction in clusters. This consistency suggests a tight connection between quenching and structural evolution towards a bulge-dominated morphology, at least in the probed cluster regions and galaxy stellar mass range, irrespective of environment-related processes affecting star formation in cluster galaxies. We also probe the stellar mass–size relation of cluster galaxies, and find that star-forming and quiescent sources populate the mass–size plane in a manner largely similar to their field counterparts, with no evidence of a significant size difference for any probed sub-population. In particular, both quiescent and bulge-dominated cluster galaxies have average sizes at fixed stellar mass consistent with their counterparts in the field.

Abstract We present the average rest-frame spectrum of the final catalog of dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) selected from the South Pole Telescope's SPT-SZ survey and measured with Band 3 of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. This work builds on the previous average rest-frame spectrum, given in Spilker et al. (2014) for the first 22 sources, and is comprised of a total of 78 sources, normalized by their respective apparent dust masses. The spectrum spans 1.9 <z< 6.9 and covers rest-frame frequencies of 240–800 GHz. Combining this data with low-JCO observations from the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we detect multiple bright line features from12CO, [Ci], and H2O, as well as fainter molecular transitions from13CO, HCN, HCO+, HNC, CN, H2O+, and CH. We use these detections, along with limits from other molecules, to characterize the typical properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) for these high-redshift DSFGs. We are able to divide the large sample into subsets in order to explore how the average spectrum changes with various galaxy properties, such as effective dust temperature. We find that systems with hotter dust temperatures exhibit differences in the bright12CO emission lines, and contain either warmer and more excited dense gas tracers or larger dense gas reservoirs. These observations will serve as a reference point to studies of the ISM in distant luminous DSFGs (LIR> 1012L), and will inform studies of chemical evolution before the peak epoch of star formation atz= 2–3.

  10. Understanding how political attention is divided and over what subjects is crucial for research on areas such as agenda setting, framing, and political rhetoric. Existing methods for measuring attention, such as manual labeling according to established codebooks, are expensive and can be restrictive. We describe two computational models that automatically distinguish topics in politicians' social media content. Our models---one supervised classifier and one unsupervised topic model---provide different benefits. The supervised classifier reduces the labor required to classify content according to pre-determined topic list. However, tweets do more than communicate policy positions. Our unsupervised model uncovers both political topics and other Twitter uses (e.g., constituent service). These models are effective, inexpensive computational tools for political communication and social media research. We demonstrate their utility and discuss the different analyses they afford by applying both models to the tweets posted by members of the 115th U.S. Congress.
